Rail Bike or Actual Cycling?

A rail bike is a pedal cart on disused railway 85km from Seoul, a third of it a motorised train. Here is the difference, and which one you meant.

Updated September 2026

These two things share a search term and almost nothing else. If your results are full of Nami Island packages and you wanted to cycle around Seoul, this page is why.

What a rail bike actually is

A four-wheeled pedal cart that runs on railway track — specifically the decommissioned Gyeongchun Line at Gangchon, in Chuncheon, Gangwon province. You sit two or four abreast, you cannot steer, and you pedal along rails through tunnels and river scenery.

Three details that the listings tend not to lead with:

It is 85 km from Seoul. Boarding is at Gimyujeong station, two or three minutes’ walk from the course. Realistically about two hours each way: the ITX-Cheongchun gets you to Chuncheon in about an hour from Cheongnyangni, and rather longer from Yongsan, but you then transfer to an infrequent local train, and the all-subway route from Myeongdong runs about two hours at ₩2,850.

Only 6 km of the 8.5 km course is the rail bike. The remaining 2.5 km is the “Romance Train”, a motorised tourist train that carries you onward, and a free shuttle bus returns you to the start.

It is mostly downhill. Chuncheon’s own tourism office describes the Gimyujeong course as consisting mainly of descent and therefore not tiring. Riders report one short climb.

Prices are ₩40,000 for a two-seater and ₩56,000 for a four-seater. It runs year-round, with roughly eight to ten departures a day depending on season, and weekend tickets sell out — book at least a day ahead.

The sister courses differ in a way worth knowing: the Gapyeong rail bike is fully electric — you pedal ten or fifteen times and a motor takes over — at ₩36,000 and ₩48,000.

So is it worth doing?

Yes, on its own terms, as a day trip. The Gyeongchun line scenery is genuinely lovely, the tunnels are done up with lights, and it pairs naturally with Nami Island or the Garden of Morning Calm, which is exactly how it is sold.

What it is not is exercise, cycling, or anything you could describe as seeing Seoul. If you have three days in the city and you book this, you have spent one of them on a coach or a train.

Nami Island: cycling there is real

Worth separating out, because it gets bundled into the same packages and it genuinely is riding a bicycle.

Nami Island has a Bike Center near the middle of the island, open 09:00 to 18:00, renting singles, couples’ bikes, family bikes and e-bikes — around ₩3,000 an hour for a standard machine. Some rentals want ID, and a driving licence for the e-bikes.

The rule that catches people: you cannot bring your own bicycle on the ferry. Private bikes, e-bikes, kickboards and e-scooters are all barred from the boat. Rent on the island or walk it.

If you want both

They are not in competition — they just are not substitutes, and the mistake is booking one while meaning the other.

A sensible week has the river ride in Seoul on a clear day, and the rail bike and Nami Island as a single day trip when the air is bad or the weather is poor, since both are largely outdoors but neither depends on you being comfortable on a bicycle. The rail-bike day trips on the shelf below almost all bundle Nami Island, the Garden of Morning Calm or Petite France, which is the efficient way to do it — the transport is the expensive part, so share it across several stops.

Book the rail bike ahead on weekends. Book nothing for the Seoul riverside: a ₩1,000 Ttareungi day pass covers it, and the guided e-bike tours sell on normal notice.
